    Holiness. From Matthew 5:20 in The Message. “Unless you do far better than the Pharisees in the matters of right living, you won’t know the first thing about entering the kingdom.”

    If Jesus brings to us any one characteristic of the heart of the Father, it is that God is gracious and redemptive. Freedom rules in the Kingdom of God, but it is not a freedom that grows without parameters. To be truly free is to recognize that our emotions and backgrounds can lead us into ways that destroy our very freedom in Christ. Right living is understanding what nurtures our spiritual freedom and living within those liberating borders.

    Lord, I want to understand the freedom that is found in Kingdom living. Teach me your path to freedom.

    PLUS….. the Pharisees get a bad rap, in that the criticism is comprehensive so much that the name is a pejorative. However, we know the Lord God created them, and we know there was good in them somewhere.

    Their devotion to study, and their hunger to understand and live out their understanding is admirable. Do you not feel called to study, understand, and live what you profess? The Pharisees erred certainly, but that does not make their entire approach wrong.

    Wow I really needed this today, I am searching heavily, and trying to find the “issues” and reasons I am plagued with troubles as of late. Then I read this and realize … I need to stop searching out the negatives, and learn how to live from the positives taught by Jesus, grace, forgiveness, and most importantly agape type love. Thank you Lord for forgiveness. Now on to a new direction…

    @Delwyn
    Hear! Hear!

    Would someone rather the Lord hand them a Telegram (The Message) or the full deal?

    One of these days someone might make millions by publishing a text that only says:
    “Jesus Saves, He Died, Rose Again, Hallelujah!”

    …or right living is understanding what nurtures our spirit… and then to live life fully.

    Yeah, yeah… I know, semantics.

    Consider that Jesus probably wasn’t referring to Bible (Torah) study or even practical application of it when he said this. No religious sect of the day was more studious and observant then the Pharisees.

    Couple this saying with Jesus’ reference to little children possessing, and tax-collectors leaning further towards, the Kingdom than the professionally religious.

    I think it’s funny how we reflect on the ‘bumblings’ of the disciples and the ‘robotics’ of the pharisees with little reflection upon the similarities we often share with them. But ask yourself, how did they get there? When I see that my band members would rather be picking at their parts than hear our devotion, then I shorten or omit some of our spiritual growth discussion. We should take warning of how easy it is to sacrifice spiritual “progress” on the altar of “process”.

    It is very easy to get swepted away in the mechanics of worship (planning, rehearsing…) we become seperated from the object of our worship. In Matthew 22:37-38 Jesus taught that we must first love the Lord your God with all heart with all your soul and with all your mind. Keeping “First things First” in our lives,living a life that reflects that love is essential in accomplishing the ministry.

    Discussed this very thing in our meeting last evening. Examining and improving our Individual walk with God, deepening our personal relationship with Him, consciously desiring and striving to be holy before Him … this is where it begins.

    Dump “The Message;” it’s a mess!
