WorshipTraining.com is partnering with Trevecca Nazarene University (TNU) to offer the TNU Certificate in Worship Arts. The next online cohort will begin will begin in late August (dates to follow) with training for TNU’s learning management system conducted the week prior to classes. Tuition is $1,200 for the complete certificate ($300 per course), not including textbooks, broken down into eight monthly payments of $150 (or discounted to $1,000 for a one time, up front payment). Registration opens May 1st and is limited to 25 students. This unique program is designed for pastors, worship leaders, choir directors, musicians, and others who desire to expand their knowledge of the biblical and historical foundations of Christian worship and who want to learn practical applications and key insights to further their ministries. The certificate consists of four six-week courses. At the completion of the courses and a final project, the student will earn a TNU Certificate in Worship Arts. Following is general course information:
Course 1: History and Theories of Worship explores the biblical and historical practices of worship from the patriarchal period to postmodern times. Attention is given to each period with relation to how the practice of the church today is shaped and informed by worship traditions throughout history. Students will be able to understand and conceive how historical models, modes, and patterns can be used in contemporary worship.
Course 2: Contextualization and Practical Applications for Worship fosters an understanding of the wide variety of contemporary cultural expressions of worship. Students will gain skills in identifying worship styles and interpreting their context, be able to reflect theologically on worship and worship planning in their individual area of service, will understand the functions of the Christian calendar and how it shapes congregational worship, and will learn to apply biblical and theological foundations of worship to weekly planning.
Course 3: The Arts in Worship leads students into a deeper understanding of the use of various art forms in worship. Students will study the historical use of the arts; understand the key roles of the arts in worship; be able to analyze music used in worship based on sound theology, biblical faithfulness, and congregational singability; will gain deeper insights for developing and working with a worship team; and will form a core arts theology that can be used to inform their voice and choice of art in worship,
Course 4: The Sacred and the Missional in Worship introduces students to the ways worship can serve to shape congregations and their mission in the world. Students will understand the role of the sacraments within the Christian tradition; articulate the role of occasional services in the life of the church; utilize worship as a means of discipleship, spiritual formation, and pastoral care; and recognize the pastoral role of the worship leader.
Final Project
Each student will create a project incorporating what they have learned in each course of the certificate program and directly relate it to their ministry context. This project will be unique to each student, but will include the following elements: articulation of a theology of worship, a plan to carry out the project in their worship setting, and written as well as visual components. A project proposal will be turned into the course instructor no later than two weeks following the completion of Course 4.
“This class hasn’t just opened my eyes to the role of worship in my church and my life but has made me appreciate going to church and my fellowship with other believers in a greater way. It has really helped inspire my Christian journey.” Valerie Lewis
