Wow, I hadn’t thought too deeply about alternate structures before this session. The verse/chorus idea was so in the foreground of my thinking that I just assumed that “This is “the” way to write an effective (memorable, acceptable, singable) song.
Also, thought it was interesting that Brian thinks about the song structure early in the songwriting process to avoid writing a lot of stuff that will just have to be cut out later. Great tip!
very cool thanks BD
I just loved this lesson! I have Sheila Davis’s books “The Craft of Lyric Writting” and “The Song Writer’s Idea Book” She is an amazing teacher who really helped me understand lyric writting and i just love that you reference her. I love your challenge to write Triple A songs. The Getty’s have done this well recently. Your lesson has inspired me!
Oh and I just thought to say “Eternity” is one of my favorite songs as well. I remember hearing it first at a wedding done so beautifully as a duet. It just soars for me with the line “no more tears or pain”. It’s a great point to think outside the Verse Chorus song and organize the creative thoughts in an AABA if you find that your lyric builds a complete “A” thought but you still want to say it again another way with a change in dynamic and feel you then construct a bridge. Now it is well past the time for me to go to bed but I want to write an AABA song! LOL thanks again!
Love the training
