This is just the video I needed for the season I’m in. The responsibility of worship leading can get overwhelming when we think the congregation isn’t participating, so we can get into this mode of trying to “cheer-lead” them into showing an outward sign of worship. I’m so glad to hear it put into the words that we’re manipulating them via group dynamic. How true. I’m going to be more sensitive about this from now on.
Central to the entire atmosphere of Worship is The Holy Spirit. When He Is Given Priority, with the Worship Leaders listens for The Holy Spirit, because GOD KNOWS what we cannot know, yes, this is vital to ‘knowing what to do next’ as Andy Park said. God’s Intervention when HE “Hijackes” the times of Worship as Tim Hughes mentions, and the entire meeting becomes infused with THE PRESENCE, POWER and HOLINESS of GOD, the Worship Team becomes an instrument of GOD’S Voice, and Worship will not end up being a presentation, it will be a sincere expression of interaction with GOD.
Not being afraid of being a little ‘bit messy’ is a good piece of advice. Andy Park reminds us that Worship Leaders are also just people, and as people, they also need to be touched by THE HOLY SPIRIT, Inspired and Refreshed. In this way, we serve Him in a sensitive response to what He Directs.
B. Doerksen’s word about trusting the Spirit’s inspiration in your prep time is so helpful! I’ve repeated it to myself on several occasions and been glad for it because I would have changed things away from God’s direction for the service.
I really need to grow toward really being able to sense the congregation’s participation level as well as the Spirit’s move in the moment. My personality type does not tend to make snap decisions or live spontaneously, but I’m trying to be aware of those times when we need “something else.”
