One of the first things that I learned in worship theology was that God was a self revealing God. An understanding of His pursuit of love exploded in me. I thought of when He made a covenant with Abraham, he had Moses build Him a tent of Meeting, He spoke through His prophets and sent His only son to earth to die for us.
I can sense His longing to be close to us. It reminds me of my cat when she comes up to my leg and just rubs back and forth. Or like when we see a baby we grit our teeth because they are so precious that we just want to squeeze them.
I think that is the way that God felt when He created Adam and Eve. He placed them in a garden and would go to them in the cool of the night to visit. When Adam and Eve sinned, they hid from God when he came to visit them. He loved it. I can feel Gods heart swelling love for them when He goes to the garden to visit. I can also feel His pain when he said, “where are you?”
And now finally, through the resurrection of His son, God lives in us through the person of the Holy Spirit. That is close. Think of how happy God must be now that He can once again walk and talk with us. And through the Holy Spirit, God is still pursuing the world. But it doesn’t stop there, some day we will actually see God face to face.
